Wise Man's Wood
Wise Man's Wood
Inspired by Wistman's Wood, an ancient oak forest on Dartmoor in Devon, England. Its history, rocks and 400 year old twisted, writhing oaks which are dwarfed by the rocky conditions in which they grow, Moss and ferns cover the rocks and even the trees. Research indicates Wistman is corruption of wise man as it has been considered mysterious, the realm of magicians and druids for centuries. It is a vestige of a prehistoric woodland protected by the boulder scree in which it grows, and was made Site of Special Scientific Interest in 1964.
Raw edge appliqué, needle felted wool for the boulders to indicate moss, . Silvered Lutradur misty moon overlaid by fine net with added silver halo to emphasise the mood. The Gaelic text aims to add intrigue 'foraoise an duine saoi' translates as Forest of the Wise Man. It is pronounced foreesh an dinna shee.
