Window to the World, Oh the Possibilities
Window to the World, Oh the Possibilities
This quilt was designed based on a photo of my grandson standing at an open door, looking out the storm door window. I used a blown up picture to design the applique pieces of his body using the fusing technique taught by Lea McComas. His shirt and pants were created by using the appli-piecing technique taught by Caryl Bryer Fallert. The multi-colored light shining through the window represents all the possibilities ahead for him, and I created that by fusing tiles onto a multi-colored batik background, inspired by Gloria Loughman's book Radiant Landscapes. His plaid shirt is what most people remember about this quilt. I did not use plaid fabric; I created it using appli-piecing and a machine embroidery stitch. That was the only way I could think of to make it look like a real plaid shirt. I also used a few pens and markers for shading.
This quilt was juried into both the AQS Daytona Show and the AQS Paducah Show in 2018. At the Georgia National Fair in 2018, it won 1st Place in the Medium Quilts, Intermediate, Mixed Techniques category and also won the Georgia Living Award of Excellence. In 2019 it won 1st Place in the Small Quilts category at the American Legacy Quilt Show in Tifton GA, sponsored by the Wiregrass Quilter's Guild.
