Whimsy, grandeur, and tradition intertwine artfully, bringing "What's Old is New Again" to a modern audience.
My quilt is a tribute to my 2 favorite teachers, Mimi Dietrich for hand applique and John Anderson for free motion machine quilting. Both teachers are inspirational and technical experts. The selected hand appliqued designs are from original Old Baltimore Album quilts copied by Elly Sienkiewicz. All the appliques are needle turned. The cotton fabric is from the Kaffe Fassett line. The free motion quilting around the appliques is my interpretation of McTavishing. The center peacock medallion is one of the several nods to tradition. My machine quilted medallion design mimics Old Baltimore Album traditional quilting. I added the beads to emphasize the shape of the center medallion, used sequins to bring a touch of whimsy to the peacock feathers plus trapuntoed the 3 layers of peacock feathers to further emphasize the mediallion. The red color in the quilt is found in the four corner designs, in the border/binding as well as in every applique design to give the quilt consistency. Another nod to tradition is my design of intertwined quilted vines of feathers using free motion quilting. Being a native Marylander makes this quilt very special to me, to meld traditional and modern quilting techniques into a cohesive art quilt whose style originated in Maryland.
