Transcendence
Transcendence
Striking contrasts: the simple form of a lotus flower beneath intricate ferns and bright sunlight against deep shadows.
Inspired by a photograph I took of a lotus flower blooming at a shrine in Kyoto, Japan, this quilt reminds me of what intrigued me in the Japanese culture: elegant beauty and deep meaning. For the Japanese people the lotus symbolizes transcendence or being uplifted above the mundane, because its roots reach deep into the mud at the bottom of the pond while its blossoms reach high above with serene beauty.
The quilt was made for the auction by Microfinancing Partners in Africa in April 2019.
