The Rise and Fall
The Rise and Fall
"The Rise and Fall" by Tavia Olive was featured at Quiltcon 2022 as part of the MQG Temperature Quilts exhibit.
Artist Statement: "The rise and fall of 2020.
I began with an arrow design and a conundrum. Arizona is hot. The traditional cool-to-warm palettes of temperature quilts just didn't work well with our temp range. I played around with shifting the palette to match our average temps but nothing felt right. So, I removed color from the equation. (Credit: It was my husband's idea)
The arrows originally represented the rise and fall of daily temperatures. However, as 2020 marched on, its ups and downs - some we all shared, some were heartbreakingly personal for me - created a much deeper subtext.
Main block fabrics are the high for the day while the arrows are created from the lows. Blue strips denote rain days and the red strip was the hottest day of the year. How hot you ask? 117 degrees.
