The One That Got Away
"The One That Got Away" by Kestrel Michaud won Best Wall Quilt at AQS QuiltWeek - Daytona Beach 2025.
Artist Statement: "Only two guys with more muscles than brains would think it's a good idea to strap a steam-powered, propeller-driven flying machine on the back of a dog, but every society has its idiots. At least in this one, Lucky is having the time of his life! (And he makes it safely back to ground, despite his not-too-bright owners.)"
Techniques Used: Machine Appliquéd, Machine Quilted
Original Design: Yes
Something that Kestrel is really pushing herself towards in her newer quilts is storytelling. So the story of The One That Got Away is that in her steampunk world, two guys thought that it would be a great idea to strap a steam-powered propeller-driven backpack onto their dog and turn him into a drone. Unfortunately though, one of them has dropped the leash while the dog is in the air. Therefore, the quilt depicts the exact moment that the leash gets dropped, hence The One That Got Away. Don't worry though, the dog lands okay.
