Red Blue
"Red Blue" by Carson Converse won First Place in the Negative Space category at Quiltcon 2022.
Artist Statement: "To tame my overflowing scrap bin, I started creating 12-inch improvisational squares from my extra fabric. The process is an exercise in letting go, I work quickly and don't edit fabric by color or print. For this quilt, most of the blocks use a striped shirting, creating a large field from which the other fabrics emerge.
Once the tops are created, they are quilted with polyester thread, then over-dye to pull the fabrics together and allow the stitching (which resists the dye) to become more prominent. The resulting quilt can be surprising as each fabric reacts to the dye differently."
