Ready, Set, Go: Quillwort
Ready, Set, Go: Quillwort
This quilt uses hand dyed and hand painted silk and cotton with some raw edge and turned edge applique, and threadpainting. The subject of Ready, Set, Go: Quillwort is an aquatic plant that reproduces by spores produced at the base of the leaves. It is part of a series depicting plant reproduction. The background panel is a habitat illustration of a lake in Rocky Mountain National Park. The quilt was constructed by raw edge applique using hand dyed silk and cotton. The duck in the first panel has some thread painting. Leaves in the center panel are turned edge applique. In the third panel, the megaspores (female spores) were made using Texture Magic to create the reticulated texture of these fascinating structures. The germinated microspores (male spores, much smaller than the megaspores) are thread-like with multiple appendages and are illustrated using a couched fuzzy yarn. I made the lettering at the bottom using the technique shown with a light pad on a recent TQS episode.
