Ode to Gwen
Ode to Gwen
Gwen Marston was my mentor and favorite teacher. She was the inspiration for this quilt which is a take off on her little tree quilts. 2 of the borders were attached with "jeans seams" representing her constant black jeans. 2 were attached including a flange( one of my favorite techniques). The tree was done with reverse, needle-turn applique and was hand-quilted. The "fruit" were created with circular quilting in black metallic thread. The heart is from my "parts department". The outline quilting represents the vibrant life of the tree and of Gwen. The horizontal quilting represents the earth and a flowing river. I bound the quilt using the method Gwen taught us. It is my go-to method and reminds me of her every time I bind a quilt. On the back of the quilt I attached fabric photos of some of the quilts I created at BIQR over a 20+ year period.
