Artist Statement: "This quilt was inspired by New York Beauty quilts. Because NYB quilts are rather rigid in their design layout, I cam to the conclusion that I could not do a 26-block layout. I considered combining the I and J letters since they could have probably gone together in the same size block. I remembered a button someone had given my husband for Christmas one year that had a large L on it with a red slash across it, that is, No L, a play on the word, Noel. I thought, oh, I could use that as a title, draft my design for 25 blocks, leave out the letter L, and use traditional Christmas colors! The curved pieces are paper pieced. I then appliquéd them onto the yellow backgrounds. I couched down a black and gold cord to add some interest. I pieced all the letter blocks with the traditional antique alphabet block pattern."
Also About "No L": "Inspired by quilt collector, Bill Volckening's antique New York beauty quilts. I thought the large sashing intersection blocks would be a great place to put letters. Except L, that is. Being feaful of curved piecing, all the curvy pieces are appliquéd."
Fun Fact: "When I was finished with the quilt, my little brother, Keith, stopped by and I asked what he thought of my new quilt. I told him the title and explained it was supposed to be kinda Christmassy. He looked at it for a moment and said it looked like Spanish tiles. Well, great, that's not what I was going for, but it's too late now! Happy No L!"
