Mistaken Identity by Gail Stepanek & Jan Hutchison won 1st place, Bed Quilts, Traditional, at QuiltWeek, Phoenix 2014.

Mistaken Identity by Gail Stepanek and Jan Hutchison won 1st Place - Bed Quilts - Traditional, at the inaugural AQS QuiltWeek in Phoenix, Arizona in 2014. The blocks were all hand pieced and inspired by ones seen by Gail in antique quilt. The interesting choice of a gray background juxtaposed with the pops of color highlights the beautiful quilting.

Mistaken Identity was also awarded the APQS Best Longarm Machine Quilting Award at AQS QuiltWeek Paducah 2014 and now resides in the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Kentucky

Artist Statment: "I was a hand quilter but when I started doing more complicated piecing, I knew that quilting them by hand wasn't an option. Large quilts, a lack of desire to tackle them on my domestic, a lack of talent for quilting designs, and wrist surgery all led me to looking for a longarm quilter. I don't design quilts to match Jan's quilting. It's the other way around. She has to figure out what to do with the tops I send her. As I progress, I send her pictures so by the time she receives the quilt she has a good idea as to how she's going to quilt it. She has an amazing talent that I lack." - Gail Stepanek
