Michael's Quilt

Memory quilt made with fabric from my husband's colorful Hawaiian shirts surrounded by photos of him and family

When my husband passed away in February, 2024 I found comfort in using his well loved shirts in a quilt. Michael's hobby was writing and reading science fiction and we met at a science fiction club meeting in college. When I went looking for a pattern with stars in it, I found Jan Krentz's book included a Lone Star quilt with rocket ships. That was perfect. Shirts were heavily starched and cut into strips and then made into the star. The rockets were made from black and red shirts using freezer paper piecing. I created a collage of photos of Michael, mostly wearing these shirts, and including his parents, our two children and three grandchildren, and his beloved Corvette. The collage was sent to Spoonflower and made into enough fabric to fill the corners of the quilt and back the quilt. Even the binding was made with his shirts. Lee Beasley did an overall quilting of stars on her longarm.
