Artist Statement: "Marie is based upon a black-and-white family snapshot of my mother, Marie Jackson. I liked the strong foundation portrayed in her stance, while the bit of ruffle at her shoulder conveyed her femininity and vulnerability. She was gazing at the site of the chicken barn, which they would later construct. I'm sure she was hoping it would be a good source of income, cash income being in short supply for farm women of that time and place."
