"Kicks" by Latifah Saafir was featured as a part of Latifah's curated exhibit at Quiltcon 2022.
Artist Statement: "My fabric line Double Dutch was inspired by a desire to shre with my daughter happy glimpses from my very urban childhood in south central Los Angeles in the 80's. This is the environment that influenced my love for rap, the Hip Hop culture, graffiti, and urban design. You can't have that true urban experience without "tennis shoes". They are serious business. The blocks in this quilt were inspired by the hip hop artists that made their silhouettes famous. The Darryl block was inspired by Run-D.M.C. The Calvin block by Snoop Dogg. And the Adam block by the Beastie Boys. This quilt involved quite a bit of intense foundation paper piecing and the realistic Kicks are worth every stitch."
