From Carlton Brown's Instagram About The Quilt:"“I Rise” is inspired by Dr. Maya Angelou's poem “Still I Rise.” Angelou’s poem celebrates strength, resilience, and the ability to rise above hardship and injustice. She reminds us that no matter how others lie, hate, or try to break us, we can always rise. The bottom of the quilt represents the “black ocean” from the poem: “I’m a black ocean, leaping and wide, / Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.” Above the ocean, the artwork bursts with color, texture, and movement, symbolizing beauty, pride, and the unstoppable spirit of rising. Viewers may see the moon, the sun, air, and joy — all symbols of renewal and triumph that echo Angelou’s empowering message of hope and endurance."
