Home is where the Pohutukawa Flowers
Home is where the Pohutukawa Flowers
I started making the blocks while in transit in a temporary home, while building our new house. I finally finished it in my lovely new sewing room which looks out to pohutukawa and kowhai trees, and flaxes, where the tui sings. The pohutukawa is New Zealand's Christmas tree. Inspired by "Polaroid" by Siobhan Rogers, "By the Block" book - I re-designed the block, adding the spikes. Paper-foundation piecing is my favourite technique.
Materials used: Top made entirely from Kiwiana fabrics, 80/20 batting, cotton backing. Guterrmann Sulky Rayon thread used for quilting on cream, variegated threads on Kiwiana fabrics.
Techniques used: Paper-foundation piecing by machine, machine applique, machine quilting by walking foot only (no free motion quilting). Each block has a relevant word, e.g. pohutukawa quilted twice on it.
