"Helix" by Sylvia Schaefer won Best Mid-Century Mod Wall Quilt at the 2021 Virtual Spring Quilt Festival.
Artist Statement: "Jackie Kunkel's new line of science-themed batiks provided the inspiration for me to make the DNA quilt I'd been dreaming about for years. The helices are paper pieced; I almost ended up with a grave scientific inaccuracy in this quilt when I initially did not reverse the paper piecing templates! The negative space could only be enhanced by quilting additional "echo"¥ helices into it."
