Heirloom Dutch Girls

Heirloom Dutch Girls

Dutch Girl/ Sunbonnet Sue blocks made in the 1930s from dress scraps and flower sacks. Assembled and quilted in 2022

These little Dutch girls were made by Stella Margaret Hutsenpiller Thompson, born February 27, 1887, and died September 16, 1943. They were assembled by hand from scraps from her dresses during the 1930s and the background of each block is cotton from flour sacks. The blocks were safely tucked away by her daughter-in-law Delphia Counts Thompson. After Delphia's death, her daughter Sharyn took possession of the blocks, and in 2022 decided to have them assembled into a keepsake for her granddaughter. On several of the blocks, the writing on the flour sacks can be seen.
