Hawking's Bubbles II: e=mc2

Hawking's Bubbles II: e=mc2

"Hawking's Bubbles II: e=mc2" by Meri Henriques Vahl was inspired by Stephen Hawking's A Brief History of Time.

While reading an illustrated version of Stephen Hawking's A Brief History of Time, Meri came across a photo of soap bubbles. In the book, Hawking descibes how there could many universes, but like soap bubbles you can't get from one to the other. With that in mind, Meri thought that image would make a crazy quilt. This is Meri's second version of the quilt, Hawking's Bubbles II: e=mc2, with the first being made three-dimensionally with padding under each bubble.

Technique: Pieces were cut from four cotton batiks and laid on black cloth over batting; layers of netting were added and then a final layer of tulle. Machine quilting 'trapped' the collage under the tulle, and beading was applied along the edges of the bubbles.
