Garden Variety Sampler
Artist Statement: "The layout of this quilt was inspired from a page of a children's book by Walter Crane from 1878. The colors were inspired by Japanese taupe quilts, and the overall design was inspired by antique cross-stitched samplers. This quilt is actually the only quilt in the series that came out looking mostly like the original drawing. I made hand covered buttons because I couldn't imagine appliquéing nearly a hundred small circles around that border. They were then sewn onto the quilt after it was quilted and a hotfix metal rhinestud was added. It is one of the few quilts where I would not have done anything differently. Since I love the color palette and love that it is like an antique sampler, it is totally my style and was a joy to make."
Fun Fact: "This quilt was entered in 13 shows, winning 6 Best of Show awards, 1 Best Stationary Machine Workmanship, 4 First Place awards, 1 Second Place award, and 1 no win at all."
