"Flower Market, Chichicastenango, Guatemala" by Meri Henriques Vahl was made after a trip she took to Guatemala.
Flower Market, Chichicastenango, Guatemala was made by Meri after she took a trip there with the great Guatemalan quilter, Priscilla Bianchi. When she was in Guatemala, Meri's impression of the country was that she was stepping into a rainbow, and once she returned home, she collaged all the pictures she took together in her mind to create the central image. For the border, as is typical with her international quilts, Meri used fabric from Guatemala to represent the work that the people of the country do.
Technique: "This is another fabric and tulle collage quilt using woven Guatemalan fabrics and recycled hand embroidered belts, plus some batiks. A tulle overlay was applied and stitched, trapping everything in place. Faces were traced onto white cotton from photographs, then enhanced with colored pencils and permanent markers."
