One of the early challenges from the Modern Quilt Guild that Latifah participated in involved receiving fabric and being told to create something from it. Competing against other members of the guild, Latifah gave herself another challenge in making her quilt on top of the one already presented to her. That being to replicate the work of a Dutch interior designer she saw who painted huge cross-stitch marks on a wall that became a rose. Wanting to translate that into her work, she took the concept and created the characters featured in her quilt, "Duckface People".
When she was a guest of The Quilt Show, Latifah showed Alex how to make the cross-stitch block she used for these adorable "Duckface People". It would also be a great block if you are into cross stitch. You could use it to duplicate a cross stitch pattern.
