Doug Hurley, First SpaceX Dragon Commander

Doug Hurley, First SpaceX Dragon Commander

"Doug Hurley, First SpaceX Dragon Commander" by Dr. Karen Nyberg was part of her exhibit at the National Quilt Museum.

Artist Statement: "I created this textile artwork in honor of my husband, Astronaut Doug Hurly, and the first crewed spaceflight from American soil since 2011. Dougg traveled back to space in May 2020 on his third spaceflight as the commander of the SpaceX Crew Dragon Demo-2. He helped make history by working with a private company to launch astronauts into orbit. This artwork is based on an official SpaceX crew photo taken by Sam Friedman. For the background I worked from a picture of Earth that Doug took from the International Space Station. our son Jack proposed the idea of making Doug black and white with only the flag on his shoulder colored. Perfect idea!"
