Changing Gears

Changing Gears

"Changing Gears" by Tina Craig was featured in a two-page spread in "Quiltfolk" magazine in 2023.

Changing Gears began with Tina fussy cutting some of the fabrics in her stash, with the intent to put a consistent yellow center in each one of the "flowers" she was designing. When she couldn't find a yellow fabric that she liked, she left the centers to be open. After leaving those centers open, Tina still didn't know how to proceed in making her quilt. So, she threw the "flowers" she had made on the floor and they landed in the pattern that is now seen on the quilt. Seeing the "flowers" from this perspective, Tina thought they now looked liked gears and she could now envision what the quilt would be. Each gear that is touching another gear was stitched using English Paper Piecing, with the all of the gears being appliquéd to the background.
