"Janet Stone: And Now I Know My ABCs!" Exhibit Statement:"I had the word, Alphabetrees, in my head for a couple years and wanted to make a quilt using the word in the title and featuring trees. I was inspired with a layout from an antique Jewish paper cutting I had seen on the internet, although the only part of the inspiration that came from the paper cutting was the layout of the bottom alphabet blocks. I appliquéd the cream and white diamond background, fusing cut squares to a muslin background. I used a decorative machine stitch on my sewing machine over the edges of each diamond shape. The top background behind the tree is cut strips of an alphabet fabric placed in a herringbone pattern and fused onto a background fabric. The sheep at the bottom are torn strips of fabric woven together. I wanted the raw edges of the torn fabric strips to mimic fleece. The little diamond shaped letters were free motion embroidered with metallic thread on fabric covered interfacing and then appliquéd on their background squares. The zig-zag trim on the border is a linen ribbon I had in my collection of ribbons that I couched down and then hand covered buttons were added."
Initial Artist Statement:"I have had the word 'AlphabeTrees' in my head for a while and always wanted to make a quilt featuring trees to use that word. The gold letters were free-motion embroidered, and the cream-colored backgrounds were appliquéd using a decorative stitch."
Fun Fact: "If you look closely, the scallop border on the bottom has my full name in tiny appliquéd alphabet fabric circles."
