Burst
"Burst" by Marge Tucker won Best Machine Workmanship in the Mid-Century Modern category at PIQF 2019.
As most quilters do, Marge gets a lot of inspiration from looking at the world around her to light that creative spark. The sight that inspired Burst was the logo at the top of business building she spotted while stopped at a light. The logo was wedges that were different lengths and different colors arranged in a circle. To Marge's eyes, it was the most amazing Dresden Plate design that she had ever seen. Holding onto that idea for a very long time, she was finally able to start working on it in a workshop, where it eventually grew into Burst.
Artist Statement: "This was a challenge to myself to improvisationally piece Dresden Plate blocks. My wedges are all different lengths and usually alternate between a solid fabric and a "striped" fabric. While trying to choose a border fabric, I placed the center on a darker grey fabric. This resulted in the seams becoming very visible. it gave a mosaic look to the center, which I liked."
