"Janet Stone: And Now I Know My ABCs!" Exhibit Statement: "The design of this one took me back to my roots of my second quilt, using traditional blocks whose names start with each letter of the alphabet. I also wanted to add flowers whose names also started with each letter of the alphabet. I appliquéd the traditional star blocks using a decorative blanket stitch around each patch. The sheep in the center has one of each flower represented in the quilt in the wagon which was made using woven bias strips of fabric. I wanted to add the names of the blocks and flowers in the quilt and came up with the idea to incorporate them in the scalloped border. I cut a small window in each scallop and inserted a piece of fabric behind where I had hand lettered the names of the flowers and blocks. I started this quilt in May 2023. My dear husband, Brad, passed away in December 2023, so he at least saw the beginnings of it. I didn't finish it until July 2024 and dedicated it in loving memory of him, my one from the flock."
Artist Statement: "This is Blooming Blocks & One From the Flock. Each block and flower name starts with a letter from the alphabet. (Imagine that!) I hand lettered the names of each in the scallops around the border. There is also one of each flower in the sheep cart. It is the LAST in my alphabet series! and dedicated to my darling late husband who was my #1 fan."
Road to California 2025 Artist Statement: "Traditional star blocks whose names start with a letter from the alphabet, along side a flower starting with the same letter. Names of both are hand lettered in scallops around the border. Star blocks are appliqued, and one of each flower rides in the sheep cart. This is the last (#26) in my alphabet quilt series!!"
Fun Fact: "I could not find a traditional star block that started with the letter Z, so I used the traditional Zig Zag Tile block and added a star in the center and called it Zig Zag Tile With Star!"
