Double-sided quilt. Front is Harry Potter themed. Back is all about Billy. Uses appliqué and QAYG techniques.
Front of the quilt - Harry Potter side - started with the Hogwarts School crest from a continental quilt (dona/duvet) cover. Borders are in house colours, each with their house crest (from a set of house banners). The house names are appliquéd with two layers of fabric for each to make the outlines. I photopied and enlarged the house names from the banners.
The corners are simple 4-patch blocks in the house colours.
Back of the quilt is all about my grandson, Billy. I divided the centre space in four quadrants.
1. Reader quadrant is a bookshelf with favorite books from baby years through to present (9 years old, when the quilt was made and given). I printed the picture book covers and some of the chapter book covers on purchased printer prepared fabric on an ink-jet printer. I used my embroidery machine for the titles on the series of chapter books. I added a St. Kilda football club motif (Billy's Australian Rules football team). Largely this segment used hot colours.
2. Writer quadrant is in aqua shades, with an appliquéd pencil and idea bubbles using batiks.
3. Musician quadrant is in green and yellow batiks, and uses guitar appliqués designed by Robbie Joy Eklow.
4. Final quadrant is for Whatever Billy wants to be, using blue and purple batiks. This quadrant has appliquéd question marks.
The side borders explain the quadrants - 'Reader' appliquéd in red/orange batiks, 'Musician' in yellow/green batiks, 'Writer' in aqua batiks and 'Whatever you want to be' in blue and purple batiks.
The top and bottom borders have Billy's full name and nick-name, again appliquéd in a rainbow of batiks.
