silent-night-2
Silent Night
This is a stained glass window quilt with batiks and Stonehenge fabric, using Swarovski crystals for embellishment.
This pattern was purchased from Elsie Montgomery on Pintrest. I followed her instructions, and started with a hand basted quilt sandwhich of black background fabric, black batting, and backing laid out on a flat table. The pieces were already beautifully flipped (reversed)onto reverse in the pattern kit, and organized by structure/color. I traced them onto Steam a Seam 2 Lite, cut them out , and placed them onto fabric as I decided the color for each building, tree, etc. I tried to decide on colors that added both depth and interest so that each building and mountain stood out. I tried to pay attention to highlights where the light from the star would fall. Starting with the sky gave me perspective, and the piece was worked from the top down. Once the fused pieces were laid out, I started removing the paper from the back of each pece and adjusted so that an even amount of black was able to show through. The black background acted as the piping between leaded pieces in the window, so no dded leding was necssary. Once the pieces were down,they were adjusted and ironed down with a small daisy iron. I FMQ around each piece using monofilament fiber in the top and bottom bobbin. This was the actual quilting, as the sandwhich had already been made, so it was a great fast and easy technique! A bit of fabric paint was used to touch up shadows and add a few highlights. Then the edge of each piece was gently brushed with a bit of fray check to smooth out any fuzzies.

I loaned this to a church one Christmas and it was used as the alter front in the flow over area . It has shown in several libraries, a local art show, and a small quilt guild show,where it won a third place ribbon. It was fun to make. I am not a traditional quilter, and have been quilting only 5-6 years, so don't look to close. The quilt police would be appauled.

Maker: Gemma Potts

Quilter: Gemma Potts

Year Made: 2017

Owned By: Gemma Potts

Size: 40 x 60

Shows & Museums: local quilt show

Awards: ribbon

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0918/4575/5155/files/27183-silent-night-2-100-1639074105_f3c5e45e-0da7-4827-8522-83949e3ad4d4.jpg?v=1776145354
