Mutton But Letters
"Mutton But Letters" by Janet Stone won Best Home Machine Workmanship at the 2011 AQS Quilt Show & Contest in Des Moines.
"Janet Stone: And Now I Know My ABCs!" Exhibit Statement: "I bought a brightly colored package of batik fat quarters, brought them to work to show them off, laid them on a table, and thought, 'those would make great sheep!' I constructed the blocks separately and then basted them on the yellow fabric background. I cut away the yellow fabric from behind to reduce bulk and then appliquéd a single bias fold tape around each block. For quilting, I used a cardstock alphabet as a template for the letters in the yellow border. I marked a 1/2" grid for the background of each block and used a plastic free motion disc foot with markings on the foot to quilt in between the markings for a 1/4" grid. I used many letters in my collection of embellishments as well as some printed alphabet fabrics in the blocks and in the flowers on the border."
Artist Statement: "I bought a pile of fat quarters at a quilt show, had them sitting on the table, kept looking at them, and soon realized they needed to be SHEEP! This is the 8th quilt in my ongoing alphabet quilt series and has been lucky enough to win several prizes so far."
Fun Fact: "I won a BERNINA 440QE sewing machine with this quilt that I still use and love to this day."
