The number blocks are 17 x 17 "pixels" and finish at 4.25". Each stripe is 1/4". Each block uses 2 solid colors plus black. If you look closely at the finished quilt, no solid color is repeated in any row or column to further the sudoku theme. I loved being immersed in such a detailed piece and had to concentrate really hard and work very slowly to ensure such tiny stitches.

Maker: Philippa Naylor

Quilter: Philippa Naylor

Year Made: 2017

Owned By: NA

Size: 0 x 0 inches

Shows & Museums: Houston International Quilt Festival - 2017

Awards: Superior Threads Master Award for Thread Artistry

"Limbs, Ladders, Roots, and Rocks" by Deborah Boschert was created as part of her "year of ladders".

Limbs, Ladders, Roots, and Rocks started with the red strip in the middle where she wanted to create a line of trees. I had a wonderful time getting to know Natalya. We both shared photos of our work. What I learned through our interaction and sharing is that creativity has no language barriers. The creative crafts that are done in the Ukraine may include some different materials (such as straw) but the beauty of handcrafted items speaks a universal language. We quickly discussed and decided on the size and theme of our exchange piece. We wanted to create am 18"x18" mini-quilt with a depiction of something (like an animal) symbolizing our country, along with other things representing where we live. I chose a bald eagle representing the USA, along with our American flag. I also included a geographical feature, Cap Rock, representing where I live in Colorado. I combined fabric, pigments and stitching to create my art quilt. I learn something more every time I make a piece. I loved the experience and feel that I now have a new international friend who shares my love of fabric embellishment and stitching. In the course of active correspondence we realized that we have much in common. It is a love of nature, constant learning, love of art and hand sewing. For several days we were looking for a topic and my partner suggested the idea of a postage stamp, I gladly supported it. The search for the plot of the postage stamp began. The decision came unexpectedly. My hobby- antiques (porcelain, sewing machines, thimbles, postcards). I often look at antiques with a magnifying glass in my hands. This moment was included in the work. From the windows of my house there is a beautiful view of the high right bank of the Dnieper, where there is an ancient and beautiful place in the capital of Ukraine - the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra with golden domes, temples and bell tower. This form became a picture for a postage stamp. A lot of sketches and drawings were made. The technician of the performance is a manual and machine applique and a stitch, as well as embroidery. This is my debut in international exchange. From Peggy Schroeder I learned a lot about the life of the quilt masters in America. Thequiltshow.com site is now daily in my attention. I was surprised how much I gained from this - and a large part had nothing to do with quilting. My team mate is Paula. In the first few mails we discussed about what our quilts should have in common. We decided to reflect in them something from our hometown. Beside this we selected some colors which should dominate our work. After a very short time we became friends. More and more we wrote about our home, husbands, families. One day I got a largish parcel from U.S. It was from Paula: She had sewed two dresses and some bibs for my grandchildren. Quilted bibs! Our children were fascinated from them. In the meantime I designed, sewed, quilted. I did not expect that the rather small quilt took the same amount of time like a large one! But I enjoyed every hour in my quilting chamber. My quilt represents the Pauliner church here in Leipzig. The original building from 1231 survived the WWII without any damage. But it did not survive the socialism: It was dynamited in 1968 to make place for modern, "socialistic" buildings. After the reunification there arose plans to build a church again at this place. It took many years to get it succeeded. But last year it was finished. It's has two virtues at once: The shape reminds the old church, but it is a modern and distinctive building.

Maker: Maike Pitz

Quilter: Maike Pitz

Year Made: 2018

Owned By: Paula Klaassen

Size: 18 x 24 inches

Shows & Museums: NA

Awards: NA

The opportunity to be paired with a quilter from Poland was exciting. We agreed on the colors, that it would be a traditional patchwork design and it would feature the churn dash block. The rest was to be our creativity and personalities. The thrill has been similar to what I experienced back in elementary school when presented with an opportunity to have a pen pal from a foreign country! I am amazed at the beautiful work of my partner and her family and friends as viewed on Facebook and Instagram. Over the holidays she shared the details of their holiday customs and I was struck by the continuity of their culture of which I was shamefully ignorant. Being paired with a partner from Poland sparked an interest in their history and travel in that general area. What a great experience to give/receive a quilt to remember this experience. We have exchanged numerous emails, shared images of our work, pictures of our family and lots of laughs! I am so happy to have Kaye as my friend! Kaye is an expert in "La Passacaglia" quilting and I decided that my quilt should be made from pieced blocks. Using Aboriginal designed fabric depicting turtles, I worked on an idea based upon the dreamtime story "WAYAMBA THE TURTLE" to illustrate our unique Australian culture. (The story is on the back of the quilt). I was inspired by Maxine Rosenthal's book "One Block Wonders", where each hexagonal block is unique. With careful cutting and freehand machine stitching, I made more than sixty 3-inch blocks from the one piece of fabric. I arranged the blocks in a colour and design sequence that would follow the story, beginning at the top right with blocks that represented the home camp, working clockwise to the billabong and the marshland where the women and children foraged for food. This flowed into the hunting ground and then the desert and finally the petal window showing the turtle in the creek.

Maker: Brenda Dean

Quilter: Brenda Dean

Year Made: 2018

Owned By: Kay Koler

Size: 18 x 24 inches

Shows & Museums: NA

Awards: NA

I got Lenka as a partner after my first partner withdrew from the exchange. Both of us like color and paper foundation piecing and decided to do a secret swap without a theme or any set directions. Both of us like the freedom of creating quilts and I personally love to see how other people work and create. And love to see their own style. Looking through Facebook I found her personality very bubbly and colorful got a little insight into her life/sewing. As a modern quilter I'm in love with walking foot quilting so after thinking for a while an idea pop into my head and decided on stitching in the ditch around the NYB blocks and use matchstick quilting for the background to emphasize the color play in the quilt. I would do it his swap again.

Maker: Zsofia Molgaard

Quilter: Zsofia Molgaard

Year Made: 2018

Owned By: Madalena Galinska

Size: 18 x 24 inches

Shows & Museums: NA

Awards: NA

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0918/4575/5155/files/112-midnight-beauties-28-1565869475.jpg?v=1776191359
the-map-of-my-thoughts
The Map of My Thoughts

The Map of My Thoughts Novelty fabrics, bold colours and sparse quilting form this modern quilt, which depicts my ideas, feelings, expectations, boundaries, inhibitions, internal divisions and the process of crossing them. We exchanged our life's journeys and how we got to this point and it was surprising how similar they were. The best was yet to come. Sue lives in San Diego and I live near Sydney, Australia. My son and his wife had just moved to San Diego to live, while my husband and I had just arranged to fly over and spend some time with them. The second day I was there, Sue arrived to take me out for the day with her friend and have lunch. Another day she took me to meet her quilt group who were so welcoming. At the end of the day I felt like I had known her for a long time, we just clicked. I really value Sue as a friend and wanted to make my quilt to her a special gift, a reflection of what I love in my country which is our Australian Native Flowers. From my first quilting class in 1992 in Indianapolis, IN, my life has been blessed. I have moved around frequently and quilting has been a constant in my life. Joining a guild or small group in a new city offers friendship, learning opportunities and a sense of belonging. For 25 years a friend in the Netherlands and I have been exchanging blocks, letters and inspiration. When the IMQE offered to pair me with Leena, a new friend from Finland, I jumped at the chance. It has been incredible to learn how different and similar we are. She lives in a harsh climate above the Arctic Circle and I live in sunny Florida. Leena has been to the USA as an exchange student and has also visited Florida. We both have daughters - her oldest daughter will get married this year. I can't wait to see the wedding quilt Leena will make for her. Thanks to Google Earth I have seen her house with the red roof. It is a small world indeed. Leena and I both love hand embroidery and wool so my quilt has both. I have never seen the Northern Lights but I know she has and I wanted to include that in my small quilt. When I look at the quilt today, months later, it surprises me, how different it is than if I had made it for myself, this quilt is for Kathy. Once I settled on the house theme, I knew I had to find Finnish fabric. The background is hand dyed by a Finnish quilter and the main print is by Marimekko - it could not be more Finnish than that. I live far up north, little bit above the Arctic Circle, and my surroundings and seasons often creep into my makings. The two moments I love most up here are the magic of May, when white nights once again return after the harsh winter, and the first snow in the fall. I was making the quilt when the first snow came. Once the snow comes, the sun goes; our deep winter is dark and cold, life settles inside the houses, they look inviting and cozy in the arctic winter. My quilt catches the moment of the first snow. Sometimes white snowflakes are like crocheted doilies when they fall quietly down. There is hand applique, embroidery, little bit of crochet, beading and then both machine and hand quilting on the quilt. I hope Kathy likes it.

Maker: Leena Karinieme-Alve

Quilter: Leena Karinieme-Alve

Year Made: 2018

Owned By: Kathleen Moak

Size: 18 x 24 inches

Shows & Museums: NA

Awards: NA

As a quilt competition junkie, I signed up to IMQE as the long time frame suited us building a new house, and I was in transit. I never imagined it would be such an interesting experience getting to know Susan - how did they match us up so well? We have both been quilting for well over 30 years, are quilt tutors, ex. Presidents of our quilt guilds, like the same things in quilts - curves, circles, prairie points, same colours!! Through Susan I met other American quilters via a Facebook group, committed to a certain amount of sewing each day, which helped restore my quilting mojo when I became obsessed with creating my new garden. With our theme of circles/curves, I originally planned to make my first Double Wedding Ring quilt. Struggling to design something I liked, I decided to go back to my favourite paper-foundation pieced New York Beauty block which I knew I could reduce to a mini size (4"). Inspired as always by Karen Stone, I designed it while on holiday. Once home, I found my design matched the New York Beauty quilt hanging in our dining room, except Susan's version is half size. I like the thought of us both having the same! The walls in Susan's house are blue, and she is into orange at present, so requested an orange quilt with blue highlights. I've been doing quilting since 2013, I love abstract art and I'm inspired by the design of my quilts. I had the honor of exhibiting some quilt show jobs in Europe and the United States. The exchange experience with the International Miniature Quilt Exchange was very pleasant and interesting. It allowed me to meet a very nice American quilter and share with her the passion for this art. Quilting in Italy is little known, and having the opportunity to exchange experiences with the immense world of American quilting is a fabulous and unique opportunity. In Italy I am part of the Roman School of Quilting, founded by a dear friend of mine and known quilter. The school aims to spread the knowledge of the textile tradition of quilting and art quilting. The opportunity offered by TQS fits perfectly into our goals and wishes.

Maker: Maria Rosario Roseo

Quilter: Maria Rosario Roseo

Year Made: 2018

Owned By: Geneva Carroll

Size: 18 x 24 inches

Shows & Museums: NA

Awards: NA

This quilt was made for Laura, my Italian quilt partner. I took this opportunity in this mini challenge to bring this fabric to life. I designed "Broken Hives" to bring to light the issue of the decline in the population of the American bee. In this quilt the bees are depicted flying around broken hives. The pieced muted background along with the circular quilting helps the viewer imagine the bees flying in circles. My mate Karen consider herself something between traditional and modern quilter and has never created any art quilt. Well, that is a great news!!! So, I looked up her FB page. O my!!! How many Karen Woolley on facebook!!! So she told me to look for her dog Maddie in in her profile picture. My first partner never responded, and my second partner dropped out, so I was a bit worried, but hopeful I'd get one that would follow through. I was finally lucky to be partnered with Ljilja in Serbia. Ljilja and I have corresponded a number of times. I learned that she has no local quilt store, so when she visits her son in Austria, she shops for fabric there. She also likes to make things for her young granddaughter. We decided to make whatever we wanted. I selected modern looking fabrics I'd been eye-balling at my local quilt store and added 2 fabrics from my stash. I chose Disappearing 4-patch because I wanted to try the pattern. One fabric looks like lined binder paper. I'm not sure if they use that in Serbia, but I'm pretty sure they have paperclips like the ones printed on one of the other fabrics. I counted how many blocks would make it look like a full-size quilt, divided that number into the size I wanted and added in border measurements. That determined the block size I needed to make. I used 100 wt. thread for the quilting, and a 5/8" strip for the teeny binding. I love how it turned out, and I hope that Ljilja will love it too. Also, I made extra blocks so I could have a smaller sample of the quilt I made for her. I thought that if we were birds we could fly to meet one another and make it an even smaller world in which we live in. We both were raised on a family farm, we love horses, wine, quilting and our grandchildren. We have had similar tragedies in our lives, Wena was in a serious car accident and I went through Breast Cancer. In my quilt for Wena I chose to emphasize our Continents and the location of where each of us lives on the West Coasts. I live on the West Coast of the United States in California and Wena lives on the West Coast of South Africa. My State of California's flower is the "golden poppy" and a "Bluejay" is my favorite bird. Wena's National flower of South Africa is the "Protea" and the bird I chose for her is the "Lilac -breasted Roller" an African bird so beautiful and colorful like her quilts. Her quilts showed a gift for using color and her designs were whimsical and free. As we shared thoughts about how we would approach the challenge, Dagmar suggested that we make our quilts "look like twins only in different colors". We had already settled on having a feathered star as the center and building borders around it to make a medallion quilt. I agreed to design the pattern, as this is something I really enjoy. I knew that she was quite good a paper piecing so I based my design on that technique. I drew a full scale of the design and mailed that to her. The pattern I sent was only an outline of the design. I did not want to indicate any colors or values because I knew that Dagmar would excel in selecting just the right fabrics for the little quilt she would make for me. I have enjoyed making, teaching and designing miniature quilts for years. However, this challenge was especially rewarding because of the collaboration and mystery of working with a new friend from a different country. It's been so hard not to share photos of the progress of our miniature projects but secrecy and anticipation has been fun too.

Maker: Joanne Gray

Quilter: Joanne Gray

Year Made: 2018

Owned By: Dagmar Carolus

Size: 18 x 24 inches

Shows & Museums: NA

Awards: NA

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0918/4575/5155/files/96-tiny-twin-for-dagmar-33-1565865900.jpg?v=1776191378
my-star-in-your-galaxy
My Star in Your Galaxy

When I heard about the IMQE one year ago, I was immediately fascinated and this thrill to get to know something new was so great. I slept one more night and then registered directly. From this moment my heart beat a little faster and many thoughts and questions went through my head. My partner is a great, creative woman, and I have grown very fond of her during this time. We have written a lot of mails, not only about our sewing preferences, our favorite colors and patterns, quilting by hand or sewing machine, also about ourselves, our families. where we live and what we do ( if we do not sew)! finally, we decided on a pattern and it was clear to us: we sew a pair of twins. At first we decided to make the 'itty bitty feathered star, by Cindi Edgerton' as a center medallion, the further design followed a little later, designed by my team partner Joanne. My quilt top is made only of batiks in paperpieced method. I quilted it freehand with the sewing machine and provided it with an invisible binding. I started patchwork and quilting back in 2012 and I think I am still a beginner. When I read about the exchange I was unsure about to join but my quilting friends encouraged me to do so. So I took a deep breath and did it. It is the first time though that I designed a watercolor quilt. I searched the internet for pictures and most of the quilts I found were made of squares or rectangles but I wanted something different. So I decided to go with hexagons. I love to sew by hand so most of my miniature quilt is sewn by hand. I decided to only do a small part of the quilting by machine where several layers made it difficult to stitch through. All other parts are done by hand including the binding. To join an international exchange, to make a miniature quilt for someone I do not know and at last to be brave enough to enter for the show was an exciting experience.

Maker: Gila Beyer

Quilter: Gila Beyer

Year Made: 2018

Owned By: Bonnie Hall

Size: 18 x 24 inches

Shows & Museums: NA

Awards: NA
