Garcia neckites with embroidery and beading, I had leftover pieces of neckties and had a vague idea for a quilt. Inspired by a 1986 article by Blanche and Helen Young, I began to piece 9-patch blocks with the leftovers and added more "wild" ties as needed to make nearly 300 3" finished blocks. The tie pieces were stabilized with a light-weight fusible before cutting and piecing. These were arranged, assembled, and machine-quilted with silk thread. Classic floral still-life paintings inspired the applique - all done by hand and arranged free-form on my design wall. It was also shown at the Georgia National Fair.

When our local arts guild called for "green" works of art for a special show, I created the next wall hanging using a flower from the same shower curtain. While he waited for his boss to return, he watched me sew and perused my work on the walls. When he saw this particular wall hanging, he exclaimed, "Ooh! My mama would love that! My mother taught me "Wastenot, Want not" and the crazy blocks are made from scraps left from other quilts. I laid those blocks out on a bed, moving them around until I was happy with the layout, then filled in the spaces with pieces of satin, again moving and shifting things as I went. No pattern, just total improv fun. The quilting is a combination of ruler work and freemotion, with each area's quilting pattern made up as I went. I love the way satin looks when it is quilted. Each time I went to the Nine Quarter Circle Ranch near Yellowstone, I started two projects, each taught in classes with Georgia Bonesteel and Charlotte Warr Andersen. A few I never finished, and some I finished independently. Then I got the idea to put several into one quilt...it turned out queen sized. Techniques included needle turned appliqué, fused and machine stitched appliqué, layered appliqué with wash-away thread, strip piecing, strip piecing with Grid Grip, hand piecing, paper piecing, etc. The hand-pieced eagle took years to finish, as I got frustrated working on the talons. One photo shows the stitching on the backside of the eagle. In early 2018, I put it all together and had it custom long armed by a talented friend.
