I also try to visit aquariums as often as I can because it is such a visual feast. So once I dove into art quilting, it didn't take long to begin creating under the sea scenes where I can plaly with fabrics and combine reality and fantasty into one quilt. I exhibit and sell most of these quilts and each time one finds a new home it affirms that others love them too.

Maker: Eileen Williams

Quilter: Eileen Williams

Year Made: 2020

Owned By: private collector

Size: 42 x 32 inches

Shows & Museums: NA

Awards: NA

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0918/4575/5155/files/27814-colorful-reef-93-1677245950_c752055b-4a5b-4264-bf6a-9c128bbee755.jpg?v=1776144891
germany-memory
Germany Memory
Hand painted.confetti. quilted
This is a small landscape of the town of Rothenburg in Germany. I followed her instructions, and started with a hand basted quilt sandwhich of black background fabric, black batting, and backing laid out on a flat table. The pieces were already beautifully flipped (reversed)onto reverse in the pattern kit, and organized by structure/color. I traced them onto Steam a Seam 2 Lite, cut them out , and placed them onto fabric as I decided the color for each building, tree, etc. I tried to decide on colors that added both depth and interest so that each building and mountain stood out. I tried to pay attention to highlights where the light from the star would fall. Starting with the sky gave me perspective, and the piece was worked from the top down. Once the fused pieces were laid out, I started removing the paper from the back of each pece and adjusted so that an even amount of black was able to show through. The black background acted as the piping between leaded pieces in the window, so no dded leding was necssary. Once the pieces were down,they were adjusted and ironed down with a small daisy iron. I FMQ around each piece using monofilament fiber in the top and bottom bobbin. This was the actual quilting, as the sandwhich had already been made, so it was a great fast and easy technique! A bit of fabric paint was used to touch up shadows and add a few highlights. Then the edge of each piece was gently brushed with a bit of fray check to smooth out any fuzzies.

I loaned this to a church one Christmas and it was used as the alter front in the flow over area . His shirt and pants were created by using the appli-piecing technique taught by Caryl Bryer Fallert. Then added more of the flowers to break the pattern of the print. I wanted flowers to express joy, but I felt large bold flowers covering the black stripes as well would detract from the zebras' essential character. I chose the curved leaves and trailing vines at the top right and the curly grass at the bottom to give a feeling of playfulness. I made the quilt during the Corona Virus restrictions and had plenty of time to reflect on the fantastic uniqueness of these animals. I wondered why they evolved to have black and white stripes. I wrote my thoughts down, then searched on the internet for the reasons and added them to what I had written. I went to visit with her. Discovered a whole new world...stash, cutting board, piecing, applique....she was a master quilter and looking for a friend. I was older, slower and willing to learn...she had me stitch a red heart to a white piece of fabric..and when she saw my tiny stitches I was accepted as a student. She taught me to draw little scenes representing my family life, and transfer them into fabric scenes. Almost 8 months later I was able to spread out my completely pieced quilt top on the floor in front of her chair, as she looked out past the oxygen tube in her nose and inspected my work. After it was finished, I decided to enter it into the juried part of the show because I liked the way it came out and they waived the entry fee, so why not. I found my beautiful linen panel online and designed the borders around it. I was fortunate to find exactly the right solid colors for the borders, and so I quilted, then painted the light green border. The dark green border is my first venture into ruler work for a show quilt, since all I did was make a row of touching circles using Lisa Calle's new circle rulers with my BERNINA 830. They are hard to see, but I quilted in a frog, a pig, a parrot, and a flying bird in the white background of the central panel and then did a circular twirl fill with that. Fun to make...since I'm competing against some of the country's best quilters, I would be really surprised if it wins anything, but that's ok.
