I did the original design on EQ7, pieced and appliqued then quilted it. I stood in front of it at the Minnesota Quilt Show and knew it wasn't done. So I came home and top-stitched all the metallic gold and black bias tape that emphasizes its' Art Deco Elevator character. The biggest challenges aside from putting the whole thing together was designing the Empire State Building and the Seattle Tower. I can see both the Empire State Bilding and the Freedom tower  from my deck. Who needs the Eiffel Tower! Each small house represents a house I lived in as an adult. After making a four-block practice quilt, I realized that leaving the solid background fabric in, underneath the string portion of each block, made for a very heavy quilt, so in the real quilt I eliminated that fabric; conserved both fabric and weight!  I was so focused on this quilt that it took me less than two months from start to binding; some kind of record for me.  I hang this quilt in my hallway for a month or two at a time, and every time I walk past it I see a different fabric and fall in love with the quilt all over again.  It contains over 150 different fabrics, so there's lots to love. I didn't want squares so I searched the internet for New York Beauty blocks and Flying geese in circles. I used store bought fabric and fabric I hand dyed and matched the background of each block for the circular rings. I dreamed of rays as the background. I made the background first and quilted that. I then appliqués the circles on and then quilted them. One of the background fabrics fell off the shelf at the quilt store and insisted it had to be in this quilt. Then as I was interviewing fabrics, it again fell off the cutting table. So of course I let it be front and center. This was so fun to make the paperpieced units and fit them to their counterpart. I am so thrilled with the finished piece. 1 of a kind. My favorite I have made. The blocks and the Seminole piecing units are batiks.
