Michael's hobby was writing and reading science fiction and we met at a science fiction club meeting in college. When I went looking for a pattern with stars in it, I found Jan Krentz's book included a Lone Star quilt with rocket ships. That was perfect. Shirts were heavily starched and cut into strips and then made into the star. The rockets were made from black and red shirts using freezer paper piecing. I created a collage of photos of Michael, mostly wearing these shirts, and including his parents, our two children and three grandchildren, and his beloved Corvette. The collage was sent to Spoonflower and made into enough fabric to fill the corners of the quilt and back the quilt. Even the binding was made with his shirts. The quilt needed to have either gladiolas or nasturtiums, contain the color ruby and have something that represented "40". When I saw this year's BOM, I thought it would be perfect since it included gladiolas. I decided that the "40" would be represented by my 40 year old fabric stash; all the fabric used was from that. The center of the quilt is Sarah's pattern. I added the outside border depicting the Blue Ridge Mountains and my favorite dragonflies. This is my first applique quilt. The applique is all needleturn. I did the quilting on my longarm. I wrapped the finished quilt around a painter's canvas so it could be hung like a painting.

Maker: Helen Smith Stone

Quilter: Norma Riehm

Year Made: 2021

Owned By: Helen Smith Stone

Size: NA

Shows & Museums: NA

Awards: Featured in the 2023 AQS Quilt Art Engagement Calendar

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0918/4575/5155/files/27736-peaceful-poppies-10-1672428476_0d903d70-dc9e-49e6-aff0-bc8f3dcf0b48.jpg?v=1776144950
a-peaceful-place
A Peaceful Place
A lap quilt depicting what my granddaughter loves about living on the west coast.
My granddaughter collected pictures of things she likes with blues in most of them, but no quilts. At the time, I had been following the work of Bethanne Nemesh with quilted mandalas on ice-dyed fabric, and wanted to try something similar. I was able to fit the challenge theme very nicely with that idea, by dividing the space into twenty sections. Next, what colors to choose? All of them! I used a beautiful silk charmeuse because I love the luster of silk. I also opted to use fabric paint (Pebeo Setasilk and Maribu silk) instead of dye because I had better control, and because that is what I had on hand. I drew out the entire design on vellum, incorporating my favorite design motifs- plumeria, pineapples, palm trees, and sea turtles, then "tie painted" the fabric so the color changes matched the rings in the design. Next was quilting the design on my wonderful Innova longarm. Since I wanted the quilting to be well defined, I chose to double the batting, using Soft&Bright layered over Warm&Natural. The turtles and their silhouettes are hand turn appliqué. To finish I used Inktense pencils, PearlEx powdered pigments, Jacquard colorless extender, and metallic gel pens to emphasize the motifs, and added about 800 Swarovski crystals for some sparkle.

This quilt has been juried into quilt competitions at IQF Houston 2021, Road to California 202s, and AQS Branson, MO 2022. Then one day I got the bright idea that instead of pulling that collection out and petting it a few times every year, if I actually used those fabrics in a quilt, I could enjoy them more often. Using the block dimensions from Carolyn Forster's "Japanese Stars and Lanterns Quilt" pattern, I modified it for paper piecing. After making a four-block practice quilt, I realized that leaving the solid background fabric in, underneath the string portion of each block, made for a very heavy quilt, so in the real quilt I eliminated that fabric; conserved both fabric and weight! I was so focused on this quilt that it took me less than two months from start to binding; some kind of record for me. I hang this quilt in my hallway for a month or two at a time, and every time I walk past it I see a different fabric and fall in love with the quilt all over again. Bernina's 125 Anniversary celebration had a pillow project using clamshells that layered the fabrics and then embroidered them with stitches included on my Bernina 770QE. I used the clamshell pattern and then appliqued them into the border. It is custom quilted by Karen Marchetti. Now I need to bind it before another ten years slips away! I had only attended two other improv classes in my life, thankfully taught by master and quilt icon, Gwen Marston. It was then that the bug bit me. But I lacked the courage to continue creating improv quilts on my own. Maria's class catapulted me back into this approach while I was lucky enough to experience an 8-month remission from ovarian cancer. I fell in love with quarter circles and braided curves; this is the quilt that wanted to be created. I call this quilt, Choosing Life, as that is what the design and quilting process affirmed for me. The design was inspired by my time living in Hawaii, which continues to be my muse today. I admire traditional Hawaiian appliqué quilts, and sought to replicate that style. Once all of the "blocks" and center area were designed, I transferred the designs to my big piece of white fabric, which I then quilted on my longarm. Once quilting was finished came the most time-consuming phase- hand painting the whole-cloth, using Inktense pencils, Jacquard colorless extender, with some PearlEx powdered pigment (for shimmer). The painting took about ten months. When I saw her NYBeauty BOM quilt the next year, I knew I had to make one. I kept up with the monthly block construction, but when it came to quilting it, I became stymied. It took a year to determine what I wanted to quilt in each area and design them. When I began to quilt, my longarm began to misbehave! I thought I would never get it completed. The computerized quilting pattern is Maureen's Stars and Pearls by Maureen Foster. It was started for the Moda 50 Years Contest but wasn't entered. It was based on a sampler pattern I drew in EQ a few years ago. The dark background triangles were cut first and placed on a design wall. Then the star blocks were made 2 at a time using the same fabrics with different designs, for a total of 20 different block designs. There are 1972 pieces in the quilt center and 900 pieces in the pieced borders. A few different Moda fabrics were added for a total of 50 fabrics used in the quilt. The units measure 4 1/2" high. The assembly was done in horizontal rows. I auditioned other border designs first before deciding to go with simple squares and 4 patch blocks using leftover fabrics from the 5" strips. I had already saved the fabrics used in the final pieced border.

Maker: Annis Clapp

Quilter: Annis Clapp

Year Made: 2024-25

Owned By: Annis Clapp

Size: 65" x 65" inches

Shows & Museums: NA

Awards: NA
