Garcia neckites with embroidery and beading, I had leftover pieces of neckties and had a vague idea for a quilt. Inspired by a 1986 article by Blanche and Helen Young, I began to piece 9-patch blocks with the leftovers and added more \"wild\" ties as needed to make nearly 300 3\" finished blocks. The tie pieces were stabilized with a light-weight fusible before cutting and piecing. These were arranged, assembled, and machine-quilted with silk thread. Classic floral still-life paintings inspired the applique - all done by hand and arranged free-form on my design wall. I am not an expert, but I love art quilting and took on the project, starting with a sketch on an 8.5 x 11 piece of copy paper. After finalizing the sketch, my daughter and I went through my stash and chose fabrics for each of the figures. I made my larger figure drawings and laid them out on a 4 x 6 piece of paper to get the best perspective. Using Ricky Tims freezer paper method of patterns and Steam-A-Seam 2 Lite, I made my figures, laid out my backgound fabric for sky and the collage beach\/water, and placed my figures on it as they had been on the paper. Placing the squares on point added more interest and the salmon piping helped unify the quilt by bringing the eye from the center square all the way out to the border.  Because the blocks were not exactly square, the swoopy border on the diamond worked well.  The quilting was done with my domestic machine on a Grace Cutie frame. I was bored one day and just wanted to start a project but I didn't want to do a lot of piecing so I started going through my stash to see if anything inspired me and I came across the fabric on the bottom of the quilt. It had a background of grays and purplish colors with these jagged dark gray and black bushes.  I thought okay, now that might make a good foreground that I can do some thread painting on!  I had died a piece of white fabric light blue and that made my background, from there I used some brown Grunge fabric for the tree and I wanted a hummingbird so I found a picture online and ironed a piece of white fabric on freezer paper and used my printer to see if that might work and I was surprised that it worked great!  I used Inktense pencils to color it and from there I just let the quilt evolve. The butterflies, the purple bushes, and the flowers around the birdhouse were cut from other fabrics I had so I cut them out and appliqued them after I thread-painted the foreground and used some fabric paint as well. The birdhouse I made from Grunge and raw edge appliqued as well. One print, no longer available, was a turquoise print called Istanbul.  Because I don't have a local longarm quilter, I decided to QAYG. This influenced the layout and construction of the large sections. In some of the white blocks I accented the them using a machine embroidered quilt motif called Moroccan Tiles.  I used a paisley sashing to join the pieces.  Along a side strip, I machine embroidered the \"label and dedication \". All in all it too about 2 months to design and complete. My mother taught me \"Wastenot, Want not\" and the crazy blocks are made from scraps left from other quilts. I laid those blocks out on a bed, moving them around until I was happy with the layout, then filled in the spaces with pieces of satin, again moving and shifting things as I went. No pattern, just total improv fun.  The quilting is a combination of ruler work and freemotion, with each area's quilting pattern made up as I went. I love the way satin looks when it is quilted. It can be tricky to work with, but my freeform method allows for play and a deeper seam allowance helps.
