It was entered in the Balanced Pieced and Applique category. The pattern is Jen Kingwell's Green Tea and Sweet Beans, made primarily in Kaffe Fassett fabrics. Its name comes from the teal border fabric that features verses from Amazing Grace. I named it Amazing Grace for three reasons -- the border fabric design, the hymn Amazing Grace was my late mother-in-law's favorite song and she inspired me to quilt, and there are so many errors in this quilt that I need a lot of grace from those who appreciate it. I pieced, quilted and bound it all this summer. They were married Oct. 12, 2024 which is the same day my husband and I met in 1986. It is also the 1 year anniversary of my husband receiving his bone marrow transplant. So his new birthday!! So much meaning for us on this date that of course, there needed to be a quilt!! My hope is that they get to visit each of the parks during their years together and create a lifetime of wonderful memories. They're taking a honeymoon to a few of these parks next year sometime. So it went along with their plans first and foremost.

About the quilt:

I used a Riley Blake panel for the center, added a charcoal colored border on 2 sides, then surrounded with a border using Legends of the Parks fabric for a little fun. I added another charcoal border and finally a Mountain Majesties border. I mimicked the mountains on the wider charcoal border, used clamshell design on the green, Legends border. I made a pebbles design along each side of the panel to signify the paths they'll blaze. Then I quilted diagonal lines on the actual panel to keep it simple. The reverse side is a center panel of "Postcards of National Parks" fabric along with Legends fabric and Badges of the Parks fabric.

Maker: Stephanie Finnell

Quilter: National Parks Majestic Mountains.

Year Made: 2024

Owned By: Rachel Julian and Wes Julian

Size: 60 x 60 inches

Shows & Museums: NA

Awards: NA

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0918/4575/5155/files/28539-national-parks-w-mountain-majesties-border-48-1729538119.jpg?v=1776144227
created-to-shine-like-stars-2024
Created to Shine Like Stars 2024
The pattern is Atomic Stars. I am not an expert, but I love art quilting and took on the project, starting with a sketch on an 8.5 x 11 piece of copy paper. After finalizing the sketch, my daughter and I went through my stash and chose fabrics for each of the figures. I made my larger figure drawings and laid them out on a 4 x 6 piece of paper to get the best perspective. Using Ricky Tims freezer paper method of patterns and Steam-A-Seam 2 Lite, I made my figures, laid out my backgound fabric for sky and the collage beach/water, and placed my figures on it as they had been on the paper. I did all of the thread painting and quilting by free-motion on my longarm,and it is now hanging in my daughter's studio.

Maker: Linda Heimerl

Quilter: Linda Heimerl

Year Made: 2023

Owned By: Heidi Steffens

Size: NA

Shows & Museums: NA

Awards: NA

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0918/4575/5155/files/27791-gather-under-the-goddess-moon-73-1676036087_9fabc83c-01d8-4f3b-8df1-1d0026d2af44.jpg?v=1776144906
blue-river
Blue River
Wonky log cabins placed on point against a scrappy blue background.
This quilt began with four wonky log cabin squares I made on a visit to my sister in 2022, also a quilter. Later at home, I began piecing a blue background to put a dent in my stash of blue fabric scraps. Placing the squares on point added more interest and the salmon piping helped unify the quilt by bringing the eye from the center square all the way out to the border. Because the blocks were not exactly square, the swoopy border on the diamond worked well. The quilting was done with my domestic machine on a Grace Cutie frame. I've given quilts to other family members, so it was their turn. They chose the colors...blue but no yellow! The elements were Moroccan motifs in the blocks. The motif is repeated in the center. I chose arabesque designed fabrics mostly from Spoonflower. The Hand of Fatima is used in both small and large scale. Another hand motif is featured as the centers of some blocks. One print, no longer available, was a turquoise print called Istanbul. Because I don't have a local longarm quilter, I decided to QAYG. This influenced the layout and construction of the large sections. In some of the white blocks I accented the them using a machine embroidered quilt motif called Moroccan Tiles. At the time, I had been following the work of Bethanne Nemesh with quilted mandalas on ice-dyed fabric, and wanted to try something similar. I was able to fit the challenge theme very nicely with that idea, by dividing the space into twenty sections. Next, what colors to choose? All of them! I used a beautiful silk charmeuse because I love the luster of silk. I also opted to use fabric paint (Pebeo Setasilk and Maribu silk) instead of dye because I had better control, and because that is what I had on hand. I drew out the entire design on vellum, incorporating my favorite design motifs- plumeria, pineapples, palm trees, and sea turtles, then "tie painted" the fabric so the color changes matched the rings in the design. Next was quilting the design on my wonderful Innova longarm. Since I wanted the quilting to be well defined, I chose to double the batting, using Soft&Bright layered over Warm&Natural. The turtles and their silhouettes are hand turn appliqué. To finish I used Inktense pencils, PearlEx powdered pigments, Jacquard colorless extender, and metallic gel pens to emphasize the motifs, and added about 800 Swarovski crystals for some sparkle.

This quilt has been juried into quilt competitions at IQF Houston 2021, Road to California 202s, and AQS Branson, MO 2022. My daughter asked me to make a wall hanging using a couple of the butterflies, and the series was born! The first piece features two large butterflies appliqued on a mocha solid. I added a bit of color to the butterflies using Sharpies and rubbing alcohol. I did a bit of trapunto work on the butterflies and free-motioned the piece on my sit down midarm. It hangs in my daughter's bathroom.

The huge flowers left on the remnants of the shower curtain begged to be used next. One was colored with Sharpies and rubbing alcohol in shades of purple, orange and yellow. I appliqued it on a black background and free motioned it as well. That wall hanging was accepted into the juried East Cobb Quilt Show in Marietta, GA. It was also shown at the Georgia National Fair.

When our local arts guild called for "green" works of art for a special show, I created the next wall hanging using a flower from the same shower curtain. It is my favorite in the series. I applied color using Sharpies and rubbing alcohol, appliqued it to a lime green groung and then quilted it heavily. That piece was donated to a local charit for auction and was purchased by a dear friend.

The final piece featured the last of the shower curtain butterflies. For this wall hanging, I again applied color with Sharpies and rubbing alcohol but also added blades of grass in batiks to the purple background.

This piece was haning in my sewing room when we had a plumber replacing a toilet. The plumber had informed me that he would charge $100 to dispose of the old commode, and I KNEW my husband wouldn't agree to that! The plumber left a young apprentice to finish the job and within minutes, the apprentice had difficulties and needed the plumber's assistance to proceed. While he waited for his boss to return, he watched me sew and perused my work on the walls. When he saw this particular wall hanging, he exclaimed, "Ooh! My mama would love that! She has a butterfly tatoo that looks a lot like that butterfly! Her birthday is today." He asked the price, and I told him $75. The young man asked if I would hold it until he got paid at the end of the week HIs mama deseserved to get her birthday gift that night, so I made this proposition to the apprentice: "You take that old commode with you when you leave, and you can HAVE the quilt for your mama!" It was a win-win!

Maker: Valerie Duff

Quilter: Valerie Duff

Year Made: 2019

Owned By: Various persons

Size: NA

Shows & Museums: East Cobb Quilt Show, Georgia National Fair

Awards: NA

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0918/4575/5155/files/27412-shower-curtain-series-91-1652911779_ceb0d447-b6ee-4d82-aa30-d562379a840d.jpg?v=1776145191
