The subject of Ready, Set, Go: Quillwort is an aquatic plant that reproduces by spores produced at the base of the leaves. It is part of a series depicting plant reproduction. The background panel is a habitat illustration of a lake in Rocky Mountain National Park. The quilt was constructed by raw edge applique using hand dyed silk and cotton. The duck in the first panel has some thread painting. Leaves in the center panel are turned edge applique. In the third panel, the megaspores (female spores) were made using Texture Magic to create the reticulated texture of these fascinating structures. The germinated microspores (male spores, much smaller than the megaspores) are thread-like with multiple appendages and are illustrated using a couched fuzzy yarn. Although the process is easier than I thought, doing a portrait was harder than I thought.

Maker: Nina-Marie Sayre

Quilter: Nina-Marie Sayre

Year Made: 2022

Owned By: Artist

Size: 54 x 54 inches

Shows & Museums: NA

Awards: NA

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0918/4575/5155/files/27732-tessa-s-mosiac-25-1672275794_c291c2d1-e38c-44bd-95eb-811afc20208d.jpg?v=1776144953
east-meets-west-love-story
EAST MEETS WEST LOVE STORY
EAST MEETS WEST.A 12 year creation.Bernina all the way. Thread painting, applq. & machine embroidery .
"EAST MEETS WEST" sarted in the west with a love of the southwest colors, western living, and all the simplicity in the colorfull wild life as seen on the right side of the quilt.

After showing it thus far to a friend, she said," Sue you know you'll have to make a sequel to this with the East." And then my mind kicked in and went WILD. It went from 30 by 36 inches to 109 by 93 inches. I started saving all kinds of objects and drew designs that inspired both sides. My phone and computer went into over-load motion. Gather Hand drawings, embroidery designs that I re-digitized by adding and taking away stitches. Searching in colouring book, all kinds of internet objects that cought my eye. I serched the objects and changed the colors a hundred times over.

When it comes to sewing, crafting and art," if its FUN, and relatively turns out like I thought,then I'll try it again and simplify the process untill I LOVE IT" and then I know that I can call it a SUCCESS.

Over the 12 years we moved twice, so keeping every thing at hand was a task to contend with. Grand daughters packed my entire sewing room. But the one rule was keep "EAST MEETS WEST" intact no matter what.... as I knew they would , it was soon back on the wall board once again. Some days I enter the room and look at it wondering what and how to divide these 2 worlds... then one day out of the"mouths of babe's" the answer was given. My grandson who was at the time somewhere around 7 or 8, came into the sewing room and said " Grama who gets this one? I replied"If I can't figure out how to separate these 2 worlds befor I die , I don't realy know". He stood there looking and intensely said" Grama you need a great big tree". I asked "what kind". "A BIG pine tree with big pine cones another with lots of flowers". The decision of one side with western pine and the other Asian wisteria was the answer. That day was somewhere in the 5th year of the quilt. Some days and even months ahead the prosses stoped and start then one day I opened the door and lights would come on and the work would again start to flow. As more winters and summers went by my grandson would enter the room often stopping in and look to see what i added.He would ask all kinds of question about the objects. Out of 4 granddaughters and him being the only grandson he was the most interested in this life quilt. So it maybe simple to know who will be the caregiver of my quilt somday when the time is right.

When the itch to work would hit I again would work the colors and placement of the pieces. I tryed to do all the thread- shadowing on the objects before they were raw edge appliqued down. Some fabric paint and sticks were used if the highlight or shading needed to be intensified. It was applied at this time because the management under the machine head was difficult maneuvering so much fabric around. The choise of stiches and movement of shodows came easer to achieve with a 8 by 8 inch peice of fabric rather than a whole quilt twisting and turning. So many times I wished that I would have had a long arm machine. I can only imagine what could be done and so much simpler.

Looking at the quilt each side has all the loves this asian woman has to give and take . Her new life in the west with all that made him what she loved so much about him. And in the east all the love she would be leaving. Her family, an old love, the beautiful animals and plant life that would not be seen in western morning sunrises. As the West is as beautiful but in a very different way. Her decision to make, is as intense as the 12 years of decisions that I made this in this quilt.

The day i took 12 years of work to the quilter was a day the sun rose in both worlds and my world became lighter and brighter. It wasn't until I attended a workshop with Susan Carlson in 2016 that I knew how my quilt was going to be constructed. In early 2017, my daughter required an art piece as a backdrop for her final recital to complete her flute masters in Antwerp, Belgium, and it was then that my quilt became a reality. The recital, entitled A Sunburnt Country Project, explored Australian music and culture, and my quilt fit perfectly. As Indigenous culture was central to the project, I decided to maximise the use of fabrics that were designed by Australian Aboriginals, with over 90% of the fabrics used meeting this criteria. The quilt was constructed using Susan Carlson's applique method. There are several thousand pieces appliqued, most pieces no larger than 5cm x 5cm, but many smaller than a fingernail. I completed the quilting myself on a Handiquilter Avanté, incorporating Aboriginal symbols in the quilting, to further enhance the cultural story of the quilt. The quilt took approximately 700 hours to complete and successfully travelled across the world with me to be exhibited at the recital in May 2017.

My quilt won Best of Show, Best Art Quilt and Viewer's Choice prizes at some local quilt shows in Australia in 2017 and 2018, and after being rejected as a competitor in Houston in 2018, it won Second Prize in the Innovative category in the World Quilt Competition in 2019.

Maker: Terri Ahrens

Quilter: Terri Ahrens

Year Made: 2017

Owned By: Terri Ahrens

Size: NA

Shows & Museums: Royal Queensland Show - Quilts Across Queensland, Brisbane Quilt Show, Gympie Rotary Quilt Show, World Quilt Show New England, Pennsylvania National Quilt Extravaganza, Pacific International Quilt Festival,

Awards: 2017: Best of Show, Viewer's Choice, First - Open Art Quilt - Royal Queensland Show Quilts Across Queensland; 2018: First in Applique/Mixed Techniques Professional and Award of Excellence: 2019: Second in Innovative Category, World Quilt Competition

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0918/4575/5155/files/27235-a-sunburnt-country-94-1641338225_cbdd63ff-dd24-45bb-a82e-013a032813ba.jpg?v=1776145315
milady-s-treehouse
Milady's Treehouse
I used my collection of vintage laces and panels to embellish my new series.
I had taken a class with Kelly Cline on using vintage linens in a quilt and I thought it would be interesting to try with my usual subject of using old buildings as inspiration. It is both hand and machine pieced and quilted.

Maker: Kat Day

Quilter: Kat Day

Year Made: 2021

Owned By: Kat Day

Size: 60.5 x 60.5 inches

Shows & Museums: NA

Awards: NA

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0918/4575/5155/files/27214-milady-s-treehouse-11-1640622259_a7b70f3c-39be-4a14-b000-09761caebf50.jpg?v=1776145330
ball-time
Ball Time
My quilt is of our Cavoodle Miss Maxie asking for the ball to be thrown.
I did a 4 day fabric collage class with Susan Carlson at the AQC Melbourne Australia in 2019 and finished it a year later..

Maker: Jennie Breeze

Quilter: Jennie Breeze

Year Made: 2019-2020

Owned By: Jennie Breeze

Size: 88 x 94 inches

Shows & Museums: NA

Awards: 2nd prize in 2021 QuiltNSW Other Techniques

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0918/4575/5155/files/27204-ball-time-80-1639875072_3b4dc722-ebf0-406a-912c-9778eb53d204.jpg?v=1776145337
italian-seaside
Italian Seaside
This was created for the Hoffman Challenge, using the fabric required. I enjoy the beach and swimming in the ocean. I can spend hour after hour in an aquarium and I always cherish the time I spent scuba diving and snorkling. And because that is so familiar to me, I am always amazed to talk with people who have never even seen the ocean and have no idea of the vast number of creatures and plants that live in the sea. By creating under the sea art quilts, I can combined my love of the sea with my with artistic desires, and for me, it is just pure fun! I like to give viewers something to look at the catches the eye right away and then as you begin to explore the quilt, there are more things to discover that are not so obvious. I am not sure which is the most fun; designing the quilt or quilting it. The quilting adds many of the less obvious details such as the different patterns in corals, or a flounder hidden in the sand, or currents in the water. And while it is fun to create actual sea creatures it is also fun to throw in some that are just from my imagination. I would like to think that if people realize what a beatiful and vast world lives in our oceans, they may be a little more mindful about not polluting the waters or throwing their trash in our sea.

Maker: Eileen Williams

Quilter: Eileen Williams

Year Made: 2019

Owned By: Eileen Williams

Size: 26 x 35 inches

Shows & Museums: Crystal Coast Quilters Guild, Allure of the Sea solo exhibit University of North Carolina, Charlotte, North Carolina Aquarium Pine Knoll Shores solo art exhibit

Awards: 2019 CCQG Viewers Choice

I saw this pattern and it made me smile, and I had to make it!!
