Art Deco Elevator, original block and quilt
I designed this elongated block that I call "the Scroll" and have been having a very good time with it. It is constructed via a hybrid technique, part Caryl Fallert-Gentry, part Philippa Naylor, part me. It entails fusible paper, eye-balled 1/4" seams, Glue-Baste-It, turned edges and small top-stitching at the very edge of the folds. I did the original design on EQ7, pieced and appliqued then quilted it. I stood in front of it at the Minnesota Quilt Show and knew it wasn't done. So I came home and top-stitched all the metallic gold and black bias tape that emphasizes its' Art Deco Elevator character. The paisleys were machine appliqued, with turned edges, using a small straight stitch, in layers, fussy-cutting my fabrics as I went along, until I was happy with them. Four of the paisleys are the same (in the center) but the rest are all individually different. I arranged and re-arranged many times before it looked right, using the background and border that I had already pieced together as my base. When I was happy with the arrangement, I glued everything down with "Glue-Baste-It" and machine appliqued everything together, using Philippa Naylor's method of straight-stitching close to the folded edges that I mentioned above. Michael's hobby was writing and reading science fiction and we met at a science fiction club meeting in college. When I went looking for a pattern with stars in it, I found Jan Krentz's book included a Lone Star quilt with rocket ships. That was perfect. Shirts were heavily starched and cut into strips and then made into the star. The rockets were made from black and red shirts using freezer paper piecing. I created a collage of photos of Michael, mostly wearing these shirts, and including his parents, our two children and three grandchildren, and his beloved Corvette. The collage was sent to Spoonflower and made into enough fabric to fill the corners of the quilt and back the quilt. Even the binding was made with his shirts. My Lynx, Ram (big horned sheep), and plocar bears are a few of my favorites. I was so happy they chose my theme, and look forward to seeing all the wonderful entries!

I made "Barn Owl" as an entry. I started with the Barn owl as part of a class project in tukineko inks with June Jaeger at the Sisters, Oregon Quilters Affair, class. I loved the finished owl and decided to work it into a piece. I set the owl on a branch of a tree of my own design made with fabrics, lace, organza (leaves), and thread painting. I love to do thread painting on most of my wildlife pieces.

I entered this piece into the Arizona Quilt Show this year and won 2nd place in the Art/Innovative category! Yeah! I was very pleased and excited!

It's been a wonderful journey with this barn owl. I plan to do a few more owls, like the Snowy Owl set in an arctic scene with Ptamigans (bird) and an Ermine, and another piece with Great horned owlettes and parent in a nest in the Sonoran Desert on a rock cliff face. Both of these are already in the process of being made. I've painted the backgrounds, on blues on white denim for the Artic scene, and rusty oranges and brown paint on canvas for the Sonoran desert piece. The quilt needed to have either gladiolas or nasturtiums, contain the color ruby and have something that represented "40". When I saw this year's BOM, I thought it would be perfect since it included gladiolas. I decided that the "40" would be represented by my 40 year old fabric stash; all the fabric used was from that. The center of the quilt is Sarah's pattern. I added the outside border depicting the Blue Ridge Mountains and my favorite dragonflies. This is my first applique quilt. The applique is all needleturn. I did the quilting on my longarm. Double batted, wool over 80/20. Rather than roads, I opted for gardens and included bees, butterflies, a dragonfly, a caterpillar, snail and turtle. Family houses are included in the inner circle including dogs, cats and birds. I drafted the city buildings using photos of buildings that have meaning to me and my family, opting for three in each section rather than 4. Corner skyscrapers are city hall in my hometown of Dover, NH (clock time is when I was born), the Academy Building at Phillips Exeter Academy where my son attended (his birth time on clock), Thompson Hall at the University of New Hampshire where my husband worked (his birth time on clock) and Union Chapel in North Hampton, NH where we were married in 1983. Houses in the city are the four homes we've lived in over the past 40 years. Our fur baby, Bingo, is at two of the houses. I designed the vine border and went wild created penny flowers. When I look at my first house, the gray #9 at the top center (where I grew up) compared to the outer border, I'm amazed at how much I grew in terms of stitching.

I sent my quilt across the country for custom quilting by Cindy Paulson (The Quilted Connection) in Utah. Gather Hand drawings, embroidery designs that I re-digitized by adding and taking away stitches. Searching in colouring book, all kinds of internet objects that cought my eye. Grand daughters packed my entire sewing room. But the one rule was keep "EAST MEETS WEST" intact no matter what.... as I knew they would , it was soon back on the wall board once again. Some days I enter the room and look at it wondering what and how to divide these 2 worlds... then one day out of the"mouths of babe's" the answer was given. My grandson who was at the time somewhere around 7 or 8, came into the sewing room and said " Grama who gets this one? I replied"If I can't figure out how to separate these 2 worlds befor I die , I don't realy know". He stood there looking and intensely said" Grama you need a great big tree". I asked "what kind". "A BIG pine tree with big pine cones another with lots of flowers". The decision of one side with western pine and the other Asian wisteria was the answer. That day was somewhere in the 5th year of the quilt. Some days and even months ahead the prosses stoped and start then one day I opened the door and lights would come on and the work would again start to flow. As more winters and summers went by my grandson would enter the room often stopping in and look to see what i added. He would ask all kinds of question about the objects. Out of 4 granddaughters and him being the only grandson he was the most interested in this life quilt. So it maybe simple to know who will be the caregiver of my quilt somday when the time is right.

When the itch to work would hit I again would work the colors and placement of the pieces. I tryed to do all the thread- shadowing on the objects before they were raw edge appliqued down. Some fabric paint and sticks were used if the highlight or shading needed to be intensified. It was applied at this time because the management under the machine head was difficult maneuvering so much fabric around. The choise of stiches and movement of shodows came easer to achieve with a 8 by 8 inch peice of fabric rather than a whole quilt twisting and turning. So many times I wished that I would have had a long arm machine. I can only imagine what could be done and so much simpler.

Looking at the quilt each side has all the loves this asian woman has to give and take . Her new life in the west with all that made him what she loved so much about him. And in the east all the love she would be leaving. Her family, an old love, the beautiful animals and plant life that would not be seen in western morning sunrises. As the West is as beautiful but in a very different way. Her decision to make, is as intense as the 12 years of decisions that I made this in this quilt.

The day i took 12 years of work to the quilter was a day the sun rose in both worlds and my world became lighter and brighter.
