Next I made coral using water soluble fabric and free motion. I dyed cheesecloth to add embellishment to the underwater scene. Using my embroidery tool I made fish and an octopus. I couched yarn of various colors and textures. I cut fish out of printed fabric and fused them on. Finally I added sea shells and beads and stones to finish it off. Most have been in exhibitions, both juried and solo and often displayed at conferences when I taught. The majority of them are now in private collections. They were various sizes, both full bed and many wall quilts. Those made in the earlier years were all hand quilted and I considered them as keeping me rooted to the quilt tradition. In later years as my teaching increased and time became a challenge they were machine quilted by me and others.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eI also taught classes designing 8 point stars fussy-cut from wild, often garish and large prints for several years. It was my favourite and most popular class.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003ePeacock Star is one of several I made for a retrospective show at the Vermont Quilt Festival. The star was pieced from a multi-coloured print of peacocks and then reverse appliqued by machine on a piece of African dyed cotton from Senegal, with blue cranes printed on it. The Senegalese fabric was a souvenir given to me by a friend. I serched the objects and changed the colors a hundred times over. \u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eWhen it comes to sewing, crafting and art,\" if its FUN, and relatively turns out like I thought,then I'll try it again and simplify the process untill I LOVE IT\" and then I know that I can call  it a SUCCESS.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eOver the 12 years we moved twice, so keeping every thing at hand was a task to contend with. Grand daughters packed my entire sewing room. But the one rule was keep \"EAST MEETS WEST\" intact no matter what.... as I knew they would , it was soon back on the wall board once again. Some days I enter the room and look at it wondering what and how to divide these 2 worlds... then one day out of the\"mouths of babe's\" the answer was given. My grandson  who was at the time somewhere around 7 or 8, came into the sewing room and said \" Grama who gets this one? I replied\"If I can't figure out how to separate these 2 worlds befor I die , I don't realy know\". He stood there looking and intensely said\" Grama you need a great big tree\". I asked \"what kind\". \"A BIG pine tree with big pine cones another with lots of flowers\". The decision of one side with western pine and the other Asian wisteria was the answer. That day was somewhere in the 5th year of the quilt. Some days and even months ahead the prosses stoped and start then one day I opened the door and lights would come on and the work would again start to flow. As more winters and summers went by my grandson would enter the room often stopping in and look to see what i added.He would ask all kinds of question about the objects. Out of 4 granddaughters and him being the only grandson he was the most interested in this life quilt. So it maybe simple to know who will be the caregiver  of my quilt somday when the time is right.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eWhen the itch to work would hit  I again would work the colors and placement of the pieces.  I tryed to do all the thread- shadowing on the objects before they were raw edge appliqued down. Some fabric paint and sticks were used if the highlight or shading needed to be intensified. It was applied at this time because the management under the machine head was difficult maneuvering so much fabric around. The choise of stiches and movement of shodows came easer to achieve with a 8 by 8 inch peice of fabric rather than a whole quilt twisting and turning. So many times I wished that I would have had a long arm machine. I can only imagine what could be done and so much simpler.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eLooking at the quilt  each side has all the loves this asian woman has to give and take . Her new life in the west with all that made him what she loved so much about him. And in the east all the love she would be leaving. Her family, an old love, the beautiful animals and plant life that would not be seen in western morning sunrises. As the West is as beautiful but in a very different way. Her decision to make, is as intense as the 12 years of decisions that I made this in this quilt.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eThe day i took 12 years of work to the quilter was a day the sun rose in both worlds and my world became lighter and brighter. My daughter asked me to make a wall hanging using a couple of the butterflies, and the series was born!  The first piece features two large butterflies appliqued on a mocha solid.  I added a bit of color to the butterflies using Sharpies and rubbing alcohol.  I did a bit of trapunto work on the butterflies and free-motioned the piece on my sit down midarm.  It hangs in my daughter's bathroom.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eThe huge flowers left on the remnants of the shower curtain begged to be used next.  One was colored with Sharpies and rubbing alcohol in shades of purple, orange and yellow.  I appliqued it on a black background and free motioned it as well.  That wall hanging was accepted into the juried East Cobb Quilt Show in Marietta, GA.  It was also shown at the Georgia National Fair. \u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eWhen our local arts guild called for \"green\" works of art for a special show, I created the next wall hanging using a flower from the same shower curtain.  It is my favorite in the series.  I applied color using Sharpies and rubbing alcohol, appliqued it to a lime green groung and then quilted it heavily.  That piece was donated to a local charit for auction and was purchased by a dear friend.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eThe final piece featured the last of the shower curtain butterflies.  For this wall hanging, I again applied color with Sharpies and rubbing alcohol but also added blades of grass in batiks to the purple background. \u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eThis piece was haning in my sewing room when we had a plumber replacing a toilet.  The plumber had informed me that he would charge $100 to dispose of the old commode, and I KNEW my husband wouldn't agree to that!  The plumber left a young apprentice to finish the job and within minutes, the apprentice had difficulties and needed the plumber's assistance to proceed. While he waited for his boss to return, he watched me sew and perused my work on the walls.  When he saw this particular wall hanging, he exclaimed, \"Ooh!  My mama would love that!  She has a butterfly tatoo that looks a lot like that butterfly!  Her birthday is today.\"  He asked the price, and I told him $75. I fell in love with flamingos and decided to try my hand at making a collage wall quilt.  I pieced together neutral fabric scraps for the background and straight line quilted it before adding any applique.   I used freezer paper to draw my shapes free hand for the flamingo and leaves, added fusible to the back of my fabrics, and fused them to the background.  Leftover fusible scraps from previous applique projects were used for highlights, foliage and features of the bird.  I fussy cut some Kaffe flowers to fill in, added some Chenille-it strips to the wing and feet, and stippled over all of the appliqués.  It was a complete design on the fly, fun scrap quilt that needed a whimsical boarder treatment.  I cut random strips of neutral background fabric scraps and made a boa type border to finish. All my fabric has holes.   It is like a triptych.   There is morning\/spring, dusk\/autumn and night\/winter.  It all started in my head with bigfoot.  He is the star of the quilt.  Of course coming in second is the alien ships.  If you look closely behind the \"glass\" made of angelina fibers you can see little aliens in there.  I also used angelina fiber to make the rainbow.  This just came off my flynn frame today.  I still need to bind it and embellish it. Once all of the \"blocks\" and center area were designed, I transferred the designs to my big piece of white fabric, which I then quilted on my longarm. I chose the white rhino as my focus for this quilt because on a recent trip to Samburu, I spotted a white rhino. Unfortunately, due to poaching, the white rhino is highly endangered and I wished to represent their majestic beauty through my art. While I've seen other quilters depict black rhino's in their quilts, I was specifically inspired to use the white rhino as my focus.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eThis was a challenge quilt in which I sought to encompass a number of different mediums, including appliqué and thread painting. I concentrated heavily on the eye of the rhino, and used fabric paint to do so. I always believe the eye is the soul of a work. I used paint to highlight the details of the rhinos face, for example, the shadows around the ears and the wrinkles around his eyes.
