I continue to create this piece to be displayed in our guilds quilt show the last weekend of February 2020 which was themed "The Roaring 20s". There is a tiny red flange at the binding that measures 1/8" wide. The full size of this quilt is 7 1/2" x 17 1/4". I entered it in the 2022 Franklin County Fair in Hilliard, Ohio (a suburb of Columbus) and won a 2nd prize ribbon.

P.S. because I called this Deco Rose #1, I felt compelled to make a Deco Rose #2 which I am currently working on. It went from 30 by 36 inches to 109 by 93 inches. I started saving all kinds of objects and drew designs that inspired both sides. My phone and computer went into over-load motion. Gather Hand drawings, embroidery designs that I re-digitized by adding and taking away stitches. Searching in colouring book, all kinds of internet objects that cought my eye. I serched the objects and changed the colors a hundred times over.

When it comes to sewing, crafting and art," if its FUN, and relatively turns out like I thought, then I'll try it again and simplify the process untill I LOVE IT" and then I know that I can call it a SUCCESS.

Over the 12 years we moved twice, so keeping every thing at hand was a task to contend with. Grand daughters packed my entire sewing room. But the one rule was keep "EAST MEETS WEST" intact no matter what.... as I knew they would , it was soon back on the wall board once again. Some days I enter the room and look at it wondering what and how to divide these 2 worlds... then one day out of the"mouths of babe's" the answer was given. My grandson who was at the time somewhere around 7 or 8, came into the sewing room and said " Grama who gets this one? I replied"If I can't figure out how to separate these 2 worlds befor I die , I don't realy know". He stood there looking and intensely said" Grama you need a great big tree". I asked "what kind". "A BIG pine tree with big pine cones another with lots of flowers". The decision of one side with western pine and the other Asian wisteria was the answer. That day was somewhere in the 5th year of the quilt. Some days and even months ahead the prosses stoped and start then one day I opened the door and lights would come on and the work would again start to flow. As more winters and summers went by my grandson would enter the room often stopping in and look to see what i added. He would ask all kinds of question about the objects. Out of 4 granddaughters and him being the only grandson he was the most interested in this life quilt. So it maybe simple to know who will be the caregiver of my quilt somday when the time is right.

When the itch to work would hit I again would work the colors and placement of the pieces. I tryed to do all the thread- shadowing on the objects before they were raw edge appliqued down. Some fabric paint and sticks were used if the highlight or shading needed to be intensified. It was applied at this time because the management under the machine head was difficult maneuvering so much fabric around. The choise of stiches and movement of shodows came easer to achieve with a 8 by 8 inch peice of fabric rather than a whole quilt twisting and turning. So many times I wished that I would have had a long arm machine. I can only imagine what could be done and so much simpler.

Looking at the quilt each side has all the loves this asian woman has to give and take . Her new life in the west with all that made him what she loved so much about him. And in the east all the love she would be leaving. Her family, an old love, the beautiful animals and plant life that would not be seen in western morning sunrises. As the West is as beautiful but in a very different way. Her decision to make, is as intense as the 12 years of decisions that I made this in this quilt.

The day i took 12 years of work to the quilter was a day the sun rose in both worlds and my world became lighter and brighter. At the time, I had been following the work of Bethanne Nemesh with quilted mandalas on ice-dyed fabric, and wanted to try something similar. I was able to fit the challenge theme very nicely with that idea, by dividing the space into twenty sections. Next, what colors to choose? All of them! I used a beautiful silk charmeuse because I love the luster of silk. I also opted to use fabric paint (Pebeo Setasilk and Maribu silk) instead of dye because I had better control, and because that is what I had on hand. I drew out the entire design on vellum, incorporating my favorite design motifs- plumeria, pineapples, palm trees, and sea turtles, then "tie painted" the fabric so the color changes matched the rings in the design. Next was quilting the design on my wonderful Innova longarm. Since I wanted the quilting to be well defined, I chose to double the batting, using Soft&Bright layered over Warm&Natural. The turtles and their silhouettes are hand turn appliqué. To finish I used Inktense pencils, PearlEx powdered pigments, Jacquard colorless extender, and metallic gel pens to emphasize the motifs, and added about 800 Swarovski crystals for some sparkle.

This quilt has been juried into quilt competitions at IQF Houston 2021, Road to California 202s, and AQS Branson, MO 2022. Machine pieced and hand appliqued by several friends.
This is a group quilt started in a 1997 round robin. The small blue center square is a piece of silk a friend brought me from China because she knew it was my favorite shade of blue. There were no rules in the round robin; each participant did what she thought the quilt needed at that point. I supplied many fabrics, but participants could add their own also. At one point, we changed to a king size bed from a queen. The quilt sat for a long time before I came up with a satisfactory final border. I had it quilted by checkbook because I don't attempt anything this large, and I wanted more intricate quilting than I can do myself. It is hand appliquéd and hand quilted
A quilrt friend of mine and I both decided we wanted to make " A-Z With Ewe and Me", Janet Stone's BOM for TQS in 2014. Because we were both working on other projects at the time we didn't begin our quilts until 2017. To make my quilt I selected an initial set of fabrics but often went back to my stash to find just the right piece, making it all the more fun. The piping and outer border were selected after the blocks were completed and joined together. I used red fabrics to spell my granddaughter's name, Avery; black with gold fabrics for TQS; and 17 black fabrics for the remaining letters. I decided to hand appliquéd instead of fusing, using Ricky Tim's Stable Poly Stuff to glue baste the appliquéd before stitching down. I also used wool for the sheep, fleecing the border sheep with French knots using Shetland Spindrift yarn. My granddaughter, whomI was babysitting on Mondays, went to my quilt group with me and watched her quilt come together, giving it loving hugs along the way. The final stitch was put into the quilt on Dec. 2021.
