Nouveau Quattro Alfabetico
Artist Statement: "My favorite typeface when I was young was the classic art nouveau typeface. I decided I would feature it in this quilt. I came up with the idea of using the letters mirror imaged, side by side and up and down. I liked the way it didn't immediately read as letters. The gray and white backgrounds were reverse appliquéd with the batiks underneath. This was the first time for some major free motion feather quilting and pebbles. I marked the spines of the feathers and then just free motion quilted them. I remember after I finished the quilting, some of the groups of feathers had only 9 plumes, and in some there were 10. I thought, oh no, I won't win any prizes with this quilt when the judges realize my feathers aren't the same. (I later realized that judges spend less than 5 minutes judging each quilt, and they have no time to be counting feathers!)"
Fun Fact: "My husband thought the way I positioned the letters in this quilt made them look like some kind of Alien symbols."
